X-Particles FAQ

I own X-Particles 4, will I have Upgrade to the next Release and pay Annual Maintenance?

We will no longer release new numbered versions of X-Particles, which then require you to purchase an Upgrade to gain access to the latest features. Instead, we'll provide a regular stream of major new features throughout the year, available to everyone with up-to-date maintenance. These features will be accessible through our Early Access Programme to all those with up to date maintenance.

I’m still using Version 3.5 does this mean I have to buy a New License to receive support and maintenance? Or can I upgrade to 4?

We will continue to support X-Particles 3.5 users until December 31st, 2018. After this period you can upgrade to our Latest Release and receive 12 months Support and Updates.

Can I buy the Maintenance Bundle if I bought X-Particles and Cycles 4D at different times?

The INSYDIUM Maintenance Bundle provides 12 months maintenance for X-Particles 4 and brings your Cycles 4D Maintenance in line regardless of when your Cycles 4D License was purchased. If your X-Particles maintenance is still valid, buying the bundle will provide you with an additional 12 months cover after your current plan expires. Making the maintenance bundle, even more, cost-effective.

Why should I buy maintenance while my current license is still covered?

When you purchase a license the first 12 months of Technical Support and Updates are included, after that time if you want to continue to receive Technical Support and Updates you will need to purchase a 12 months Maintenance Agreement. If you purchase a maintenance agreement while your current license is still valid, you will gain an additional 12 months cover after your current plan expires.

What if I forget to renew my Maintenance Agreement for X-Particles?

When you purchase a license the first 12 months of Technical Support and Updates is included, after that time if you want to continue to receive Technical Support and Updates you will need to purchase a 12 months Maintenance Agreement.

If you choose not to renew your Maintenance Agreement your license will remain valid, but you will not receive Updates or be entitled to Technical support. The download will also be unavailable for your license, please keep a copy of the latest build for your license.

You have a full year after your Maintenance Agreement expires to purchase an additional 12 months. Please note that the renewal date will run from the original purchase date, not 12 months from the date of purchase of the renewal.

I have upgraded to CINEMA 4D R19, do I need a new X-Particles serial number?

X-Particles does not require a new serial number, our unique licensing system will automatically handle your CINEMA 4D upgrade based on your X-Particles license type. Download X-Particles from your personal download link and install it into R19, then use your existing X-Particles serial number.

This applies to any CINEMA 4D upgrade, you will never require a new X-Particles serial number.

How do I download X-Particles?

Every X-Particles is individually signed and registered to its owner on downloading from the download link you are sent after you have purchased. This information is encoded into X-Particles. Your download link is your personal download and should not be shared with anyone else.

If you have X-Particles installed already in Cinema 4D and have the X-Particles Updater enabled (with an internet connection), this will always give you the latest version of X-Particles available for your license.

What if my X-Particles or X-Particles OpenVDB is missing

On some Windows systems you may get a warning that you are missing some runtime files. If so, here are the files and links to download them:

MS VS2013 Runtime:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=40784

MS VS2017 Runtime:

https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=746572

When does the offline days run from?

Once X-Particles has successfully connected to our license server and verified your license then your X-Particles on the CINEMA 4D and machine you are running it from has 30 days it can be offline. This is checked every time X-Particles starts if an internet connection is available. If you need a longer offline period please contact technical support, this period can be extended (subject to conditions).

My seat count limit has been reached and it is in use on another system, what do I do?

The error message will display the name of the system and Cinema 4D version your license is still assigned to. You may also view this information by opening the X-Particles License Manager found in the X-Particles menu. This is available even when the seat limit is reached.

If the Cinema 4D shown is open, please close this CINEMA 4D to release your license or use the Disable option in the X-Particles > Change Serial Number.

If the Cinema 4D shown is not currently open then it is possible that Cinema 4D had not fully closed. Occasionally something can prevent Cinema 4D from exiting plugins correctly (such as a crash or Cinema 4D updating) which will leave the X-Particles license seat assigned to the Cinema 4D and machine/user. If this has happened, open the Cinema 4D the license is still assigned to and close it. This will then release the license.

If you are still having problems, please contact our Technical Support who will be able to assist.

My Team Render/Command line Render/NET Render client tells me the X-Particles emitter could not register?

Please check your client has internet access for the online licensing. X-Particles comes with unlimited render nodes but these still need to connect to our license server.

As of X-Particles 3.5 render nodes have offline support through a license key. If your render nodes do not have an internet connection, please follow the instructions shown in the Cinema 4D console.

We use Deadline/Royal Render/Other Render Farm Application, does X-Particles support this?

Render farm applications use the Cinema 4D command line rendering, so yes X-Particles fully supports this with unlimited render nodes.

What version of Cinema 4D will my new X-Particles license be compatible with?

Our latest release is compatible with Cinema 4D R14 through to R19.

What happens to my license if your server goes down?

The X-Particles license allows 30 days offline by default, so it should not be a problem if your internet goes down (or you have no internet for a period of time) or in the unlikely event of our server going down. To add to this we run two backup license servers. If X-Particles is unable to connect to our primary license server it will try both of our backup servers.

I use Command Line Render/Team Render/NET Render, do I need to buy render node licenses?

All X-Particles (as of X-Particles 3) licenses allow unlimited render nodes, you do not need to buy additional licenses. Install X-Particles to each client and ensure they have an internet connection for licensing. Every download of X-Particles carries your license information encoded into it, so our license server will enable your X-Particles to run under CLR/TR/NET without the need to enter a serial number for them.

I use the MAXON license server, how do I enter my X-Particles serial number?

X-Particles (as of X-Particles 3) has its own serial entry and licensing within X-Particles itself, your serial number will be requested by X-Particles on starting Cinema 4D. If you prefer to use the MAXON license server you may format the X-Particles serial number as follows.

X-Particles-License [{Cinema 4D Version}-0-1036107] <<XPLC4D {Cinema 4D multi-license end 5 Digits}-{X-Particles Serial}>>

Replacing the {..} with the information, e.g. {Cinema 4D Version} is 19 for R19 Cinema 4D serials.

Replace {X-Particles Serial} with your X-Particles serial, starting XPL-

Replace {Cinema 4D multi-license end 5 Digits} with the last 5 digits of the first part (11 digits) of the Cinema 4D multi-license, e.g the Cinema 4d multi-license starts with a 2, so for 20701012345, the last 5 digits would be 12345.

For an R19 serial 20701012345 and X-Particles serial XPL-000-000-000-000-000-000-000-000-000, the entry for the MAXON license server would be:

X-Particles-License [17-0-1036107] <<XPLC4D12345-XPL-000-000-000-000-000-000-000-000-000>>

Please Note : this general formatting is defined by MAXON for the MAXON license server.

My X-Particles license is not working, what do I do?

X-Particles licenses (as of X-Particles 3) need an internet connection at least once every 30 days.

  • If you are using any internet security/firewall please ensure it is not blocking the Cinema 4D application (hence X-Particles) or access to our server.
  • If you are using a proxy server please see the X-Particles 3 manual (see Using X-Particles > Using X-Particles over a network) for information on how to create a proxy access file to enable X-Particles to connect through your proxy.
  • If you can only grant internet access once please contact technical support about increasing your offline period (this can be done up to 6 months offline).

If you are still having problems and have an internet connection but X-Particles won’t use it, please contact our technical support. Please be aware that we can only offer suggestions and limited help finding the cause as every network and security setup is different.

I am having trouble rendering X-Particles with Team Render, what do I do?

We have produced a detailed PDF giving more information on troubleshooting problems with Team Render and X-Particles. Please see this PDF before contacting technical support. This can be found in the Downloads section of our site.

xpClothFX - I wonder if the cloth itself will have dynamic properties? So that if a sphere is dropped from above, that it will be caught by the cloth in a realistic way.

Yes, xpClothFX uses the X-Particles constraints system for dynamic particle-based simulations.

Can the xpclothFX feature work with other dynamics such as fluids?

Yes, xpClothFX works with the FluidPDB solver for unified dynamics effects.

Is it possible to sim character clothing with xpClothFX, or is it more aimed towards motion graphics work?

xpClothFX is primarily designed for motion graphics and destruction effects, however, simple clothing can be done.

Can cloth have denting effects?

Yes, the xpClothFX has built-in plastic constraints for denting.

Can the xpCirclePacker use other objects, for example trees?

You can utilise the xpCirclePacker to populate any object however the algorithm only works with Circles, so as long as your object fits within the radius of the circle there will be no overlap.

Can xpStrangeAttractors use other modifiers such as turbulence?

Yes, using the force mode all modifiers can be used.

xpExpolosiaFX - Can we see a simulation with more detail?

Sure here is a default simulation running at a Voxel Size of 0.8

Can ExplosiaFX be rendered in other third party render engines such as Octane and Redshift?

Yes ExplosiaFX can be exported as a VDB volume, and any engine that can read the VDB data can then render the volume data.

In the FluidFX demo video there is a lot of stepping in the emissions can that be solved with substeps?

The FluidFX solver does not use X-Particles Substeps, it has its own in the solver. Stepping can be solved using the new Jitter X and Y option in the emission settings for the fluid particles. so space out the emission.

Help with installation

A brief guide to installing your INSYDIUM plugin (PRODUCT)

When a plugin is installed in Cinema 4D, there are two possible locations. The first is the plugins folder in the same place as the Cinema 4D application itself. For Windows users this is generally in C:Program Files\MAXON\CINEMA 4D. For Mac users this is generally in /Applications.

The location of the Cinema 4D application on Windows

The location of the Cinema 4D application on Mac

The other location is in the user preferences folder. MAXON recommends this location because for security reasons both Windows and OSX protect the Program Files (or Applications) folders, and you may get an unsuccessful installation if you try to install a plugin there.

The user preferences folder on Windows

The user preferences folder on Mac

1. Run Cinema 4D and open the Edit menu:

Prefs1.png

2. Click ‘Preferences’. This dialog box appears: *Note that the dialog box tells you where the user preferences folder is, and provides a handy button to open it.

Prefs2.png

3. Click the ‘Open Preferences Folder…’ button. An Explorer (Finder on OSX) window will open at that location.

4. Unzip the downloaded zip file into the plugins folder in the user preferences folder.

5. Finally – and this is very important – if you are upgrading to a new version of the PRODUCT, you must remove any existing installation. Check in BOTH the user preferences plugins folder AND in the Cinema 4D application plugins folder, and delete any other folders containing the PRODUCT. If you don’t do this, Cinema 4D will try to load the PRODUCT twice and it doesn’t like that; most probably, neither installation will run.

That’s it. Do all the above and you will have installed your PRODUCT successfully!

On-line updates help

Your INSYDIUM plugin (PRODUCT) can update itself automatically by downloading and installing the latest version from our site. This process requires a restart of Cinema 4D, and full details can be found in the manual.

Occasionally, after an update the PRODUCT may not work correctly. This usually happens if it was installed in the plugins folder inside the Cinema 4D applications folder, rather than in the user preferences folder. We strongly recommend that the PRODUCT is installed into the plugins folder which is found in the user preferences folder.

This is because for security reasons both Windows and OSX place certain restrictions on what can be done in the Program Files (Windows) or Applications (OSX) folders. These restrictions can sometimes interfere with the online updater if the PRODUCT is located within the hierarchy of these folders.

You can see examples of both folder locations here:

Cinema 4D application on Windows

Cinema 4D application on Mac

User preferences folder on Windows

User preferences folder on Mac

Fixing update problems

This is straightforward. Please follow these steps to restore the PRODUCT to working order.

1. Remove the PRODUCT from your system

To do this, delete the folder called ‘PRODUCT’ from the ‘plugins’ folder in the Cinema 4D applications folder, if it is there.

On Windows this path might look like: C:\Program Files\MAXON\CINEMA 4D R15\plugins\X-Particles
On OSX the path might look like this: Applications/MAXON/CINEMA 4D R15/plugins/X-Particles

In either case, delete the folder called ‘PRODUCT’, if there is one.

Now go to the user preferences folder. This can be found by running Cinema 4D, going to the Edit menu, and clicking ‘Preferences’:

Prefs1.png

When the dialog box appears, the user preferences folder can be found at the foot of the box, like so:

Prefs2.png

Within that folder you will find another ‘plugins’ folder. Delete the PRODUCT folder inside that folder as well, if it exists.

2. Restart Cinema 4D

You can download the current full version of the PRODUCT from the downloads page on this site. Then install the plugin by unzipping the archive, preferably into the ‘plugins’ folder in the user preferences folder, NOT in the executable folder’s plugins folder. That will prevent problems with the updater in the future.

When you restart Cinema 4D the PRODUCT should now appear correctly.

How do I download Cycles 4D?

Every Cycles 4D is individually signed and registered to its owner on downloading from the download link you are sent after you have purchased. This information is encoded into Cycles 4D. Your download link is your personal download and should not be shared with anyone else.

If you have Cycles 4D installed already in Cinema 4D and have the Cycles 4D Updater enabled (with an internet connection), this will always give you the latest version of Cycles 4D available for your license.

Will Cycles work with my GPU using OpenCL?

Please see:

Cycles 4D Manual/OpenCL
Cycles GPU Rendering
Cycles OpenCL
Cycles CPU/GPU Features

Ultimately, you will need to try this yourself (Try Cycles 4D) as it depends on your system and drivers. There are too many combinations for us to test and list all.

I own X-Particles 2.5, will this work with Cycles 4D?

No, Cycles 4D is only compatible with X-Particles 3.5 onwards.

Is there a FREE demo of Cycles 4D, so I can try before I buy?

Yes, the demo will be FREE for 30 days, by submitting your registration request you agree to only use the Cycles 4D Demo for trialling the features and not to undertake commercial work, you also agree to allow us to contact you via your e-mail address for marketing purposes.

Please see Try Cycles 4D.

If I buy a New X-Particles, can I then receive the 15% discount off Cycles 4D?

Yes

Can Cycles 4D be used completely offline?

Cycles 4D has online licensing which enables us to offer more flexible licensing. This works in much the same way as X-Particles which also needs an internet connection to our online license server. This removes the need to send us your Cinema 4D serials or other information which may change and then require you to have an updated serial number. The online licensing also enables every serial number to have multiple seats so you only ever need one serial number for all your installations.

Will Cycles 4D owners receive the same updates as the Blender Foundations Cycles Render Engine?

Yes, but not instantly, the updates will be delayed as our Development Team will be working on the implementation into Cycles 4D.

Will Cycles 4D support other plugins such as TFD?

Our Development team have been working on the seamless integration of Cycles 4D with Cinema 4D. Concentrating on X-Particles support for obvious reasons, in addition, we do support TurbulenceFD. The future of Cycles 4D includes continued development, which does mean offering support to other 3rd Party Plugins.

The Blender Foundation created Cycles as a Free Render Engine, why should we pay for Cycles 4D?

The Blender Foundation is an independent non-profit public benefit corporation that exists through funding or revenue mechanisms that serve the foundation’s goals and cover their expenses. INSYDIUM LTD is a company whose Development Team have worked tirelessly for over a year on creating the bridge to Cinema 4D. We have incurred a significant financial cost; however, we have tried to keep the price as competitive as possible. The long-term goal is to support the Blender Foundation, we are currently a Diamond Sponsor and are in discussions as to how we can help them in the future.

A Cycles 4D License comes with 3 FREE Render Nodes, can I purchase additional Nodes, if so how much for?

Extra Nodes cost £60 ex VAT each with a volume discount which increases the more you buy;

Number Nodes required Extra nodes needed Discount Cost per node ex VAT
1-3 0 N/A N/A
4-7 1-4 Full Price £60

23-52 20-49 15% £51
53-102 50-99 20% £48
103+ 100+ 25% £45

Are Nodes considered entire workstations. per GPU or per CPU?

A node/seat is considered to be per Cinema 4D/Team Render/CLR Client.

Does Cycles 4D support Pascal GPU's?

Yes, Cycles 4D Supports CUDA 8 (needed for the Pascal architecture).

I use the MAXON license server, how do I enter my Cycles 4D serial number?

Cycles 4D has its own serial entry and licensing within Cycles 4D itself, your serial number will be requested by Cycles 4D on starting Cinema 4D. If you prefer to use the MAXON license server you may format the Cycles 4D serial number as follows.

Cycles 4D-License [{Cinema 4D Version}-0-1038271] <<CYCS4D{Cinema 4D multi-license end 5 Digits}-{Cycles 4D Serial}>>

Replacing the {..} with the information, e.g. {Cinema 4D Version} is 17 for R17 Cinema 4D serials.

Replace {Cycles 4D Serial} with your Cycles 4D serial, starting CY4D-

Replace {Cinema 4D multi-license end 5 Digits} with the last 5 digits of the first part (11 digits) of the Cinema 4D multi-license, e.g the Cinema 4d multi-license starts with a 2, so for 20701012345, the last 5 digits would be 12345.

For an R17 serial 20701012345 and Cycles 4D serial CY4D-000-000-000-000-000-000-000-000-000, the entry for the MAXON license server would be:

Cycles 4D-License [17-0-1038271] <<CYCS4D12345-CY4D-000-000-000-000-000-000-000-000-000>>

Please Note : this general formatting is defined by MAXON for the MAXON license server.

My Cycles 4D license is not working, what do I do?

Cycles 4D licenses need an internet connection at least once every 30 days. If you are using any internet security/firewall please ensure it is not blocking the Cinema 4D application (hence Cycles 4D) or access to our server.

If you are using a proxy server please see the Cycles 4D manual (see Using Cycles 4Ds; Using Cycles 4D over a network) for information on how to create a proxy access file to enable Cycles 4D to connect through your proxy.
If you can only grant internet access once please contact technical support about increasing your offline period (this can be done up to 6 months offline).

If you cannot grant any internet access and use the MAXON license server with a Cinema 4D license with more than 3 seats please see the FAQ about using Cycles 4D offline.

If you are still having problems and have an internet connection but Cycles 4D won’t use it, please contact our technical support. Please be aware that we can only offer suggestions and limited help finding the cause as every network and security setup is different.

My seat count limit has been reached and it is in use on another system, what do I do?

The error message will display the name of the system and Cinema 4D version your license is still assigned to. You may also view this information by opening the Cycles 4D License Manager found in the Cycles 4D menu. This is available even when the seat limit is reached.

If the Cinema 4D shown is open, please close this Cinema 4D to release your license or use the Disable option in the Cycles 4D > Change Serial Number.

If the Cinema 4D shown is not currently open then it is possible that Cinema 4D had not fully closed. Occasionally something can prevent Cinema 4D from exiting plugins correctly (such as a crash or Cinema 4D updating) which will leave the Cycles 4D license seat assigned to the Cinema 4D and machine/user. If this has happened, open the Cinema 4D the license is still assigned to and close it. This will then release the license.

If you are still having problems, please contact our Technical Support who will be able to assist.
